Description
1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Top Sportsman The 1969 Chevrolet Chevelle Top Sportsman is a professionally developed drag racing machine built with a serious competition engine, specialized transmission, advanced racing electronics, and an extensively modified chassis. This is a purpose-built race car designed around high-performance drag strip operation rather than an ordinary street-driven Chevelle. The engine is a 509-cubic-inch combination featuring a KB 600 solid block with a Hemi-style bottom end, Big Chief cylinder heads, titanium valves, and a Jesel valvetrain. Forced induction comes from a Mike Janis-modified 14-71 supercharger, with an RJS spray bar incorporated into the JBR hat. These components form a highly specialized powerplant configured for competition use. The drivetrain includes a Donovan converter drive, Neal Chance converter, and three-speed air-shifted Lenco CS1 transmission. The car features electronics for Top Sportsman competition, including Davis traction control and a Data Clutch computer system. The four-rail chassis was originally built by BWRC in 2000 using a Jerry Bickel chassis kit. Head Knocker Racing completely reworked the vehicle in 2015, fitting an Andy McCoy lightweight fiberglass body and carbon interior. This substantial reconstruction created the current race-car configuration. Chassis equipment includes Lamb Pro Stock struts and brakes, titanium lower control arms, and a Strange nine-inch floater rear axle equipped with 40-spline axles. The car uses 36-inch rear tires and 25-inch front tires, with new rubber installed all around. The drivetrain also features 14-80 U-joints.
