Description
1957 Continental Mark II Coupe
This 1957 Continental Mark II Coupe is a true American luxury icon and one of the most distinguished automobiles of its era. Known for hand-built quality, elegant styling, and exceptional craftsmanship, this remarkable survivor carries a rare documented history that sets it apart from virtually any other Mark II on the market. Originally purchased by Frank Thomas in Dallas, TX, the car was later sent to the renowned Derham Coach & Body Company in Rosemont, PA for professional custom modifications built to his personal specifications, with receipts reportedly in hand. The original cost of the vehicle exceeded $10,000 when new, with the Derham conversion adding an additional $10,000 in 1959, an extraordinary investment at the time.
This unique Derham-modified Mark II is believed to be one of one, making it an exceptionally rare example within Continental history. Derham was one of America’s most respected custom coachbuilders, and their documented archives were later donated to the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners, MI. The current owner is in the process of contacting the museum to further verify authenticity and historical details.
This car has been in the same family since the late 1970s, originally purchased by the seller’s father, and was stored under cover from the early 1980s until being revived in mid-2023 as a running and driving survivor. Since returning to the road, extensive mechanical work has been completed including new brakes, full exhaust, brake booster, battery and cables, fuel pump, ignition wires, spark plugs, tires, all fluids and hoses, radiator service and flush, and a rebuilt carburetor. The smooth-shifting three-speed transmission operates firm and properly.
Additional original features include factory carpets, leather seating, and much of its authentic character throughout. Known imperfections include inoperative factory air conditioning, wipers, fuel gauge, and oil gauge, along with a few small holes in the headliner and minor areas of surface rust covered in primer, with no rot reported on or underneath the car. With timeless design, exclusivity, documented provenance, and growing collector interest, this one-of-a-kind Continental Mark II presents a rare opportunity to own an important piece of automotive history. This is a one of one model, as it has a Derham conversion done in 1959.
